Turkey and Paraguay meet in a match that already carries knockout-round pressure, because both opened Group D with losses and cannot afford another setback. The loser will almost certainly be out, while even a draw leaves both sides relying on a complicated finish to the group.

Turkey arrived in Vancouver with real expectations but left with a 2-0 defeat to Australia, a result that exposed their lack of cutting edge in the final third. Paraguay were hit even harder in Los Angeles, where the United States beat them 4-1 and made their defensive problems impossible to ignore. With the USA and Australia already on three points, this game has become the clearest survival test of the group stage.

Turkey need a sharper final pass

This is only Turkey’s third World Cup appearance and their first since 2002, so the stakes are obvious. That famous bronze-medal run remains the standard, and this squad came to North America expecting to add to that history rather than spend the tournament fighting for one more chance.

There is enough talent to make them dangerous. Arda Güler is the main creative hub, Kenan Yıldız adds direct running and one-on-one threat, and Hakan Çalhanoğlu gives the side control, passing range, and set-piece quality from midfield. On paper, that is a strong core. In practice, Turkey looked flat against Australia and struggled to turn possession into real chances.

That is the central question for Vincenzo Montella: can Turkey make their control count? Against Australia, they moved the ball well enough at times but lacked penetration when it mattered. If they repeat that pattern, the World Cup will end fast. If they speed up their attacking combinations and get Güler closer to the box, they still have the quality to win this match.

Paraguay bring fight, but they must score

Paraguay are back at the World Cup for the first time since 2010, and Gustavo Alfaro’s team earned that return through a difficult qualifying route. They beat big-name opponents at home during CONMEBOL qualifying and showed the kind of stubbornness that has long defined Paraguayan teams. That identity matters here, because this is not a side built to trade chances in an open game.

The problem is that Paraguay were far too vulnerable against the United States. The defensive structure that carried them through qualifying was broken apart, and a 4-1 loss is a bad sign for a team that depends heavily on discipline and compact lines. Alfaro needs a much cleaner performance from the back four and a midfield that can slow Turkey’s tempo before it starts.

And yet Paraguay still have threats. Julio Enciso is the most dynamic attacker in the group, Miguel Almirón brings experience and work rate, and Gustavo Gómez remains the leader at the back. Canadian fans may also notice Andrés Cubas, who plays for Vancouver Whitecaps, and whose ball-winning role will matter a great deal if Paraguay want to keep Turkey from settling into rhythm.

The match may turn on patience

This looks like a game where the first goal could decide almost everything. Turkey should have more of the ball, while Paraguay will be more comfortable sitting deep and waiting for transition moments. That creates a clear tactical split: Turkey want structure and pressure, Paraguay want resistance and space behind the line.

Set pieces could matter more than usual. Çalhanoğlu remains one of the better dead-ball specialists in international football, and Turkey’s aerial size gives them a real route to goal. Paraguay, meanwhile, have defenders such as Gustavo Gómez and Fabián Balbuena who can handle physical battles and protect the penalty area when the shape is intact.

If Turkey score early, the game opens in their favor. If Paraguay survive the first half-hour and keep things level, frustration could build in the Turkish attack. That is the danger for a side that already failed to score once in this group.

The logic still points toward Turkey. They have the better attacking ceiling, the stronger need for a response, and the more players capable of producing a decisive moment. Paraguay can make this messy, and they probably will, but they have not shown enough offensive power to suggest they can survive a full 90 minutes if Turkey raise their level.

Prediction: Turkey 2-1 Paraguay

Turkey should find a way through, likely after a tense first hour, and Paraguay may stay alive long enough to make the finish uncomfortable. Still, the Crescent-Stars look more likely to leave with the points and keep their tournament alive heading into a decisive final group match against the United States.
