A new era begins in Rio

Carlo Ancelotti is set to reveal Brazil’s final 26-man roster for the 2026 World Cup, ending weeks of speculation around a squad built to chase a sixth global title. After submitting a 55-player preliminary pool to FIFA, the coach now has to make the difficult cuts that will define Brazil’s tournament identity in North America.

The pressure is obvious. Brazil has not won the World Cup since 2002, and every campaign since then has ended in the quarterfinals or earlier. This squad is expected to mix proven veterans, top European talent, and a few bold calls that reflect Ancelotti’s first major tournament in charge.

The core that appears locked in

Several names seem close to guaranteed selections. Alisson remains the clear first-choice goalkeeper, while Ederson is widely expected to serve as the main backup. In defense, Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhaes look like the central pairing Brazil will trust most, with Bremer and Leo Pereira adding depth if needed.

Midfield planning appears equally stable. Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes, and Lucas Paqueta form the spine of the team and give Brazil balance between protection, control, and creativity. In attack, Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Matheus Cunha, and Gabriel Martinelli offer pace and directness from different zones.

At fullback, Wesley is the likely answer on the right with Vanderson unavailable, while Alex Sandro is the leading option on the left.

The injuries that changed everything

Brazil’s squad planning has been complicated by three major injury absences. Rodrygo is out after knee ligament surgery and is expected to miss around six months. Estevao Willian has also been ruled out after suffering a serious muscle injury in April. Eder Militao is another major loss because of his longer-term knee problem.

Those setbacks matter because they reduce Ancelotti’s flexibility in both attack and defense. They also increase the chances that a veteran name with huge experience could return to the center of the conversation.

Neymar remains the biggest selection call

Neymar was included in the preliminary list even though he has not played for Brazil since October 2023, when he tore his ACL and meniscus against Uruguay. At 34, he is still Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 128 appearances, and recent reports suggest Ancelotti is seriously considering him for the final roster.

That possibility is being driven by two factors: the injuries to Rodrygo and Estevao, and Neymar’s improving form at Santos. Neymar has also said he feels physically ready and believes he has done enough to earn a place. If he makes the cut, Joao Pedro could be the most likely player to lose out despite a strong Premier League season.

Group C offers a manageable opening path

Brazil will open Group C against Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland, a draw that gives the team a realistic route into the knockout rounds. The first match comes against Morocco at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on June 13. Brazil then meets Haiti in Philadelphia during the June 19/20 window before finishing against Scotland in Miami Gardens during the June 25/26 window.

Morocco is the only opponent in the group that carries a top-tier FIFA ranking, which makes first place a strong target. Winning the group would send Brazil into the Round of 32 against one of the third-place qualifiers from another section.

What Ancelotti may choose on opening day

Based on the March friendlies against France and Croatia, Brazil could line up in either a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3. A likely starting shape would feature Alisson in goal, Wesley, Marquinhos, Gabriel, and Alex Sandro in defense, with Casemiro and Bruno Guimaraes in front of them.

Further forward, Raphinha, Lucas Paqueta, and Vinicius Junior would support a central striker such as Matheus Cunha or Igor Thiago. If Neymar is selected, he could compete with Paqueta for the main creative role or even operate as a false nine.

Why this squad matters so much

This is more than a tournament roster. It is Brazil’s attempt to end a 24-year wait and restore its place at the top of world football. Ancelotti has the experience, the structure, and enough star power to make Brazil one of the favorites. The final list will tell everyone whether he is leaning toward caution, loyalty, or a surprise that changes the entire shape of the campaign.
